EPF final settlement delayed beyond 20 days

First Steps — Verify & Initiate

1
Confirm the exact date your claim was submitted — note the acknowledgment number from the online portal or the physical receipt from the regional EPFO office.
2
Count 20 working days from submission date (excluding Sundays and public holidays) — if this date has passed without credit, you are in delay territory.
3
Check the claim status on the EPFO portal under ‘Track Claim Status’ — note the current status and any messages.
4
Verify your bank account is correctly linked and verified on the EPFO portal — even a small mismatch prevents credit even after the claim is approved.
5
Calculate the interest owed for the delay period: (Outstanding PF Balance × 12%) ÷ 365 × number of days delayed.

Follow-up Steps — Next 2–4 Weeks

1
Call the EPFO helpline (1800 118 005) with your claim reference number and ask for the specific reason for delay — get the response in writing if possible.
2
Raise a formal grievance on epfigms.gov.in: select ‘Final Settlement’ as the complaint type, enter your UAN, claim reference number, submission date, and the number of days elapsed beyond the 20-day mandate.
3
Contact your ex-employer’s HR if there are any pending attestations or employer-side actions required.
4
Visit the regional EPFO office in person if the online process is stuck — bring your UAN, Aadhaar, last employer’s PF account number, and the claim acknowledgment.
5
Request the delay interest (12% per annum) explicitly in your grievance — cite Paragraph 72A of the EPF Scheme.

Escalation — If Still Unresolved After 30 Days

1
If the grievance on epfigms.gov.in is not resolved within 30 days: escalate to the Regional PF Commissioner by post with all documentation.
2
File a complaint on the National Grievance Portal (pgportal.gov.in) under Ministry of Labour — this routes to EPFO’s central grievance cell.
3
For delays beyond 60 days: approach the Ministry of Labour helpline (14567) and explicitly cite the 20-day mandate violation.
4
Write to the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC) at EPFO’s headquarters in New Delhi if regional escalation fails.
5
As a last resort: file a writ petition in the High Court for mandamus directing EPFO to settle your claim — courts have consistently ruled in favour of employees in EPF settlement delays.

Your Rights
